South Korea signed a $43 billion deal to establish the biggest wind farm in the world. Thus, the country's government seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Korea has few energy sources of its own and relies on imported coal for around 40% of its electricity. South Korean President Moon Jae-in announced that the carbon neutrality goal last year, but at the same time is looking to phase out nuclear power, leaving the country depending on renewables to square the circle.
The complex off Sinan in the country's southwest, would be seven times bigger than the world's current largest offshore wind farm, Walney Extension.
With a maximum capacity of 8.2 gigawatts, the government is banking on it being the equivalent of six nuclear power stations.
